Between September 24 and 26 H.Hon George Dobry, The Rt. Hon Henry Brooke and Sir Robert Carnawath visited Bulgaria. The visit was the first major event in the activity of the British Balkan Legal Foundation. The esteemed guests were hosted by Mr. Borislav T. Boyanov, Managing Partner of Borislav Boyanov & Co. and co-founder of the British Balkan Legal Foundation. The meetings held with H.E. Simeon Saxe Corbug, Prime Minister, Mr. Anton Stankov, Minister of Justice, Ms. Meglena Kuneva, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chief Negotiator with the European Union, Mr. Hristo Danov, Chairman of the Constitutional Court, Mr. Vladislav Slavov, Chairman of the Supreme Administrative Court, Prof. Doncho Hrusanov, Dean of the Law Faculty of the Sofia University, Traian Markovski, Esq. Chairman of the Bulgarian Bar and Stefan Botev Esq., Chairman of the Sofia Bar were centered around the possibilities for fostering positive development of the judicial system and the legal profession in Bulgaria. Among the imminent major initiatives of the British Balkan Legal Foundation agreed, were the preparation of a “First Aid” report providing recommendations for reform in the judicial system, civil and criminal procedure to be prepared by the British judges, a one year course on English and European Law, supported by the Foundation to be included on the curriculum of the Sofia University’s Faculty of Law, a four week preliminary course to be organized in February 2002, judicial training to be provided via the Center For The Training Of Magistrates, and a European Law course for young lawyers to be administered in September 2002.
